Chaotic scenes at Bonna Night bonfires may be a thing of the past.
Yesterday was St John's Eve, when traditionally, outdoor fires dotted the skyline across Cork.
However, Cork City Fire Brigade say while they were busy, call-outs were down by around 50 percent, with fewer than 50 calls-outs this year, compared to 100 in recent years:
They say the trend points to a fall in the number of bonfires being lit, because of public safety campaigns and concern for our neighbourhoods and environment.
Speaking to RedFM News, Second Officer with the Cork City Fire Service, Victor Shine says the anti-social behaviour which dogged Bonna Night was not there last night:
"I would like to thank people for their efforts in maintaining good neighbourly behaviour around their neighbours, children, friends and so on, and not causing disruption that we used to have many years ago, where firefighters or the Gardaí and ambulance crews were being potentially assaulted at these fires trying to get things under control. It's not happening now so it's an amazing improvement and thanking everybody in Cork".
