Childline says the majority of calls they received this Christmas were from young boys.

The charity answered over 1000 online contacts, calls and texts in the last four days.

The 24-hour listening service is run by the ISPCC and operated by volunteers who say that Christmas is one of their busiest times of the year.

The line dealt with up 15,000 contacts from children during Christmas week and expect this year to be one of their busiest on record.

The charity are warning of a potential 'tsunami' of mental health problems among young people during and following the pandemic.

Speaking to RedFM News, Childline volunteer Megan Sarl from Cork outlines some of the reasons children phone them:

"Alcohol and drug abuse at home, domestic abuse, physical well-being... A lot of kids are struggling with their mental health and well-being and loneliness, isolation... And I suppose, especially around the Christmas period, Christmas isn't the same for every child. For every child that's excited about Christmas, there's a child that isn't excited about Christmas."
