Cork City Council has secured State funding to draft plans for a group Traveller housing scheme next to Spring Lane halting site.

It comes after a similar approach was rejected by city councillors in 2011.

The Irish Examiner Reports the fresh efforts to address the ongoing issues were outlined to city councillors six months on from a scathing report on the council’s management of the site.

The Ombudsman for Children’s Office found, after three years of investigation, that the council had failed to consider the best interests of children living on the site by allowing them to live in filthy, overcrowded, rat-infested, and unsafe living conditions.

The council rejected the report.

This week councillors were told that addressing the range of issues at the site is taking up a huge amount of time.
