The City's Lord Mayor says a knife amnesty could bring about a "new dawn" for Cork.

Cllr Deirdre Forde was speaking in the wake of two separate attacks in Carrigaline in recent weeks which left one man dead and led to the hospitalisation of a teenager
These latest incidents have led to fresh calls for the 24 hour manning of the town's Garda station and an increase Garda presence in the town.

Minister Simon Coveneny is due to visit the town later today and is expected to be questioned on the recent attacks and the subsequent anxiety being felt among the local community.

This week the Lord Mayor called for a serious debate to be had around knife crime.

Speaking to RedFM News Cllr Deirdre Forde says now is the time for honest debate on the topic and the need to bring in measures to take weapons off the streets of Cork:

"I think it's one way of tackling it. I don't think it's the be all and end all. But I know that it has been successful in other jurisdictions. And I think it's a start. Let people hand in their knives and those weapons, but I can assure people who still want to end them in, there won't be repercussions. It will be an act of faith and an act of a new dawn for Cork. We do not want anybody else to be damaged, maimed or dead from knife crime.
