A commemoration ceremony is taking place in Fitzgerald’s Park today to remember the Irishmen and Irishwomen who have died in past wars or on service with the United Nations.
The event, which beings at 11 o'clock this morning, is open to all.
A number of special ceremonies and events are taking place around the country, including at The National Museum of Ireland in Collins Barracks in Dublin.
President Michael D Higgins and Taoiseach Micheál Martin will attend the National Day of Commemoration Ceremony in Dublin.
Representatives of the next-of-kin of those who died in past wars or on UN service, ex-servicemen's organisations, as well as relatives of the 1916 leaders, will also be in attendence.
However, James Connolly Heron, the great grandson of 1916 Proclamation signatory, James Connolly, says he will not be attending:
"I personally won't be attending. No. Given the government's failure to, first of all, protect and preserve the National Monument that is Moore Street and their failure to develop the Commemorative Centre at Numbers 14 to 17 that was meant to be up and running for the centenary, and nothing has happened since. Promised meetings with Minister Dara O'Brien and indeed, An Taoiseach, have yet to take place in relation to this".
