CIF will tell todays Southern Region Construction Summit that 2,750 homes need to be built in the city every year.

The Ireland 2040 Plan projects that the population of Cork City and suburbs will increase by 125,000 over the next 20 years.

However concern has been raised about where these people will live after it was revealed that just 732 houses were built in the City last year.

Speaking to RedFM News, director of the Southern Branch of the Construction Industry Federation Conor O'Connell says despite the challenges, there's a sense of positivity at today's summit:

"We've had the Dunkettle Interchange commence construction, we've had the M22 the Macroom Bypass, you know the M28 has cleared one of the final legal challenges. Population is going very very strongly in the Cork city region in particular, the highest growth rates outside of Dublin. You look at the jobs announcements over the last number of weeks and months. There's clearly a need for more development in Cork, and it's a very attractive location with good lifestyle options so it's proving very very attractive to a lot of inward investors."
