Concerns have been raised about plans for a new elective hospital for the city.

Sláintecare is proposing standalone hospitals for Cork, Dublin and Galway.

The facilities would carry out high volume, low complexity procedures on a day and outpatient basis.

It's hoped the development in Cork will take pressure off acute hospitals and reduce waiting lists.

Blackpool GP Dr John Sheehan however believes this is a one size fits all approach to health care.

He told RedFM news that there is little focus on the issues affecting patients in the the Cork area.

"The concern is that there is a one size fits all approach to Cork, Dublin and Galway with a day only elective procedure hospital for Cork.

"Really, that's not what Cork needs. It needs a full standalone elective hospital, that would replace a lot of the work that the South Infirmary, Victoria Hospital and to a lesser extent the Mercy Hospital do.

"The vision really is that we have a standalone hospital that compliments CUH, that can do full elective procedures such as hip replacements, knee replacements, and other complicated procedures.
