Cork Airport say they are hopeful of signing two more airlines in the new year, however the impact of the Omicron variant means uncertainty has once again crept into the aviation industry.
The Airport was given €13.7 million by the government earlier this week on top of €25 million in 2020 to compensate for the losses caused by the pandemic.
Management say they have been using the money to shore up their finances and to offer discounted airport charges to airlines.
Eight airlines are currently offering up to 32 routes from Cork.
Speaking to RedFM News, Kevin Cullinane from Cork Airport outlines the impact of Omicron.
"With a fair wind I would have said a couple of weeks ago, prior to the outbreak of Omnicom that things were looking more positive for next year.
Obviously, the situation is very dynamic it's constantly changing. Airlines are looking for reassurances, and nobody can give that at the moment, none of us can foretell what's going to happen.
"I think we could see another two airlines joining the Fall term fold for next year that would bring us to 10 scheduled airlines operating in Cork- that's one more than we had in 2019 when we were at the peak of being Ireland's fastest growing airport."
