Cork Airport is on track to become the first state airport to reach pre-pandemic passenger numbers.

In 2019, 2.6m passengers travelled through the airport and it's anticipated that Cork will serve this number of passengers again in 2024.

The news came as the Airport hosted a visit by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications.

Committee members received comprehensive business updates on the recovery from the effects of the pandemic, growth projections for the short to medium term and updates on infrastructural works at Ireland’s second busiest airport.

Acting Managing Director at the Airport Roy O’Driscoll outlined how €40 million has been invested in major infrastructural projects at the Airport over the last three years - including the installation of a new baggage screening system and the resurfacing of the main runway.

Speaking to RedFM News Roy O'Driscoll says the recovery at Cork Airport is a lot faster than had been predicted.

"Certainly recovery in 2022 is faster than anybody expected, and our ambition in Cork is to be the first airport to recover back to our 2019 numbers of 2.6m.

"We'll be working very hard in 2023 and 2024 to achieve that milestone."
