Cork Airport say they are planning more upgrades for the New Year.
The main runway was opened at the end of November following a ten week closure to facilitate one of the fastest large-scale projects in the history of the state.
Parts of the runway were over 30 years old and had reached the end of its usable life.
Management faced harsh criticism for the closure, however they argue that a piecemeal approach would have been much more expensive and disruptive.
Speaking to RedFM News, Kevin Cullinane from Cork Airport says the new runway is performing very well:
"We were delighted to see it reopened by An Taoiseach recently. We will have further investment next year please God. We will be looking to build a new electrical substation as part of the €40 million investment that the DAA is putting into the airport at the moment. So on top of the new runway, we have a new baggage screening system gone in, a new electrical substation next year and further investments in the pipeline already."
