A breast cancer patient from Cork is calling for the age for breast screenings to be lowered.

The current age for a free mammogram is 50 but it's suggested it should be brought down to 45.

Its breast cancer awareness month and the Irish Cancer Society is raising funds to support services.

Nollaig Feehan from Mallow who is 45 and undergoing treatment for breast cancer told RedFM News the age for a screening needs to be brought down:

"I've been really shocked by how many women I've met my age, but actually even younger, and a good bit younger than me, who have also been treated for breast cancer, women, you know, in their thirties and also twenties. the screening age in Ireland at the moment is 50. Irish cancer society are trying to bring that down to 45. And that's what's being recommended by the European Union."
