Cork Business Association say they're in favour of turning on Christmas lights in the city this year, but say the display should be in keeping with efforts to reduce energy usage.

CBA President Kevin Herlihy says the lights are an important part of Christmas in the city and set a festive mood for people and businesses.

It's not yet known if local authorities around the country will put up lights this year, after the government approved measures to save energy across the public sector last night.

Speaking to RedFM News, CBA President Kevin Herlihy says they're in favour of putting up the lights:

"By all means the association is supportive of them being put up. However, I think there is an argument to say that possibly could they turn off the lights late at night or something like that. They normally would have been on overnight in recent years or in all years in fact. So it's just one suggestion that we're coming up with, we're not saying it's the correct suggestion. I suppose the worst thing that could happen would be that no lights would come on and we don't want Christmas cancelled."
