Cork businessman and Fine Gael politician John Mullins has died at the age of 57.

Mr Mullins contested last year's European elections in the Ireland South constituency.

The Bishopstown native had served as the CEO of Bórd Gais and the President of Cork Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife Siobhán and their three children.

EU Commissioner Michael McGrath paid tribute to John Mullins this morning,

"Absolutely devastating news, you know, I would have got to know John quite well in political  and business circles, and he was such a prominent figure in business and politics in  Cork over many years and made an enormous contribution to the civic life and the business life of the city".
