New landmark legislation which makes it mandatory for patients to be told about serious safety incidents comes into effect from today
Cervical cancer screening advocacy group 221+ had long been calling for the legislation to protect patients
Under the Act the National Screening Service is now obliged to tell patients of their right to ask for a review of their screening results.
Speaking to RedFM News Cork cervical check campaigner Stephen Teap welcomed the legislation saying it means disclosure is no longer only optional.
"People in the past would have to fight for information requested, and that information, as we've seen in other very serious stories over the years, isn't always provided, or it's provided too late, or you have to go to court for the information to be shared. Now it's the law, now it has to be shared"
