13 year old Jimmy Horgan died after he was struck by a lorry on Prospect Row in the city on the 17th of November 2020.
The jury of three men and three women recorded a verdict of accidental death and recommended that the City Council review traffic arrangements and install a railing at the corner of Dyke Parade and Prospect Row to encourage people to use the pedestrian crossing around the corner.
Coroner Phil Comyn described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and said it had uplifted his spirit to hear Jimmy’s parents had reached out to the driver of the truck the day after their son died to say that they did not blame him.
Council for the Horgan family Ernest Cantillon paid tribute to everyone who assisted Jimmy in the immediate aftermath and said it was considerable comfort to the family that so many people including staff from the Mercy had rushed to the scene to help. He also acknowledged the huge support that Jimmy’s School Presentation Brothers College had been.
Sergeant Fergus Twomey extended his condolences to the Horgan family and said Jimmy’s death had preceded a Tsunami of grief the likes of which he had not witness in years.
