Cork City Coroners Court has heard clear signs of infection were missed in a woman who died following weight loss surgery in Turkey.

53-year-old Pamela Canty’s husband Finbarr said he raised concerns about her leaving hospital after just two days when she was sweating and pale but was told by staff she would be fine after resting.

Coroner Philip Comyn said it is vital the public know the risks involved in travelling abroad for surgeries.

Weight loss surgeon Dr Colm O’Boyle gave expert testimony about surgery abroad and spoke to RedFM News after the inquest:

"It's a very dangerous undertaking to consider any surgery abroad. Patients in ireland would have to undergo a minimum of six months. multidisciplinary team input, see a psychologist, dietician, physiotherapist, they see me on a number of occasions and I'd organize a certain investigations, before they consider them fit for surgery."
