Cork could be set to benefit as Dublin Airport is expected to breach its passenger cap this year.

The cap, that was introduced 16 years ago, means the airport is only allowed handle 32 million passengers a year.

The DAA says it has been encouraging airlines to move routes from Dublin to Cork along with offering reductions on airport charges if they move an existing route to Cork

Travel expert Eoghan Corry says it's unclear what sanctions Dublin Airport could face

"We're in unknown territory, this is the equivalent of applying for retention, for your planning permission. But in this case, he's actually let everyone know long in advance. This is our policy, this is what we're trying to do, and it has cost Dublin airport in planning terms"
