It will take effect in Cobh, Mallow, and Midleton.

It follows the decision by Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Eamon Ryan to ban smoky coal in all towns with populations over 10,000 people.

The exact areas to be included in the new ban as Low Smoke Zones were only recently decided and publicised by the County Council, and will take effect from September 1st.

The Council will have the power to inspect premises and vehicles, with penalties of up to €1,000 for those found breaching the smoky coal ban.
