Cork Dairy Farmer Brands Reason Given For Supermarket's Dropping Price Of Milk "Laughable"

A Cork dairy farmer has branded the reason given for supermarket's dropping the price of milk as "laughable".

The Irish Farmers Association says dairy farmers fear supermarkets are on the brink of a full-scale milk price-war.

Lidl, Tesco, Aldi and Supervalu announced overnight that they're dropping the price of a 2 litres carton of milk by 10 cent.

Supermarkets say it's an effort to offer customers the best possible value - during the cost of living crisis.

However, Carrigaline Dairy Farmer, Alan Jagoe says the consequences are serious:

"Our real concern here is that retailers are saying they're dropping the price of milk due to on-farm lower production costs, which is laughable. Nothing could be further from the truth. Each and every one of our input costs has risen over the last 15 to 18 months. Nothing has dropped bar fertiliser, but that has been offset by other input raises. So to say that milk is going to be reduced in the shops due to lower farm production costs, it's serious".
