A Cork funeral director says he isn’t surprised by the introduction of a €100 charge for a death notice on RIP.ie.

The website was bought by the Irish Times Group in May and is one of the most visited Irish sites.

The charge for death notices will be introduced from the first of January, however the website will remain free to view.

Speaking on The Neil Prendeville Show, Funeral director Finbarr O’Connor says the charge is comparatively good value:

"It's a good price to pay compared to the newspapers. When rip was bought the Irish times said we will never charge to view notices. They never said that they were not going to charge to publish notices. Would you buy a money loser, without plans going forward?"
