The Cork Luas can't become another "white elephant" like the Cork Event Centre, a local Labour representative has said.
The route for the new tram system was expected to be announced in July, but the National Transport Authority (NTA) said it would be delayed after a problem was spotted with a building on the route in the City Centre.
Some €1.8 million has been spent on the Cork Luas, but the NTA has now confirmed that a building would need to be demolished in order to publish the new preferred route.
Speaking to RedFM News, Labour rerpresentative Peter Horgan said he fears the Luas will become a "white elephant" like the Cork Event Centre.
"It feels like when you mention the Event Centre, people roll their eyes," he said.
"I fear that the Cork Luas is going in that direction.
"We aren't seeing proper documentation being published, proper routes, public consultations beginning on the matter.
"We need to restore public confidence in Cork in big spending public projects – the Cork Luas is a big spending public transport project.
"It will change the face of transport in Cork City and county if we do it right."
