The delay of the announcement of the proposed Cork Luas route has been described as a bitter blow to the city.

The preferred route for the 17 kilometre light rail system was due to be unveiled early this month however the NTA say more work is needed on the city centre portion of the project.

The group have confirmed that the additional work is likely to take a number of months - however no exact date has been set.

Speaking to RedFM News, Peter Horgan from the Labour Party says the role of a public transport tsar must be created.

"The delays should have been identified when we were told it was July when we would see the route; now we're being told that  there is something wrong with the city centre section of the route that needs to be looked at.

"I have a real fear for this project now. We need someone advocating for Cork city public transport at cabinet. It appears we don't have anyone at cabinet advocating for that."
