A Cork man has died after an incident at the Killarney Forest Rally yesterday.

The incident occurred at approximately 2pm yesterday afternoon on the second running of a stage of the rally near the village of Cordal in Kerry.

The car in which the 22 year old and his co-driver were competing went off a forest road with no other vehicle involved.

The event was halted while emergency services attended the scene.

The Irish Examiner report that the man was airlifted from the scene to Cork University Hospital, while his co-driver was taken to CUH suffering from non life threatening injuries.

A statement from the event organisers last night read:

"The Killarney and District Motor Club regrets to inform that following an accident on stage four of the Killarney Forest Rally, a competitor succumbed to his injuries and passed away in Cork University Hospital.

"We extend our sympathies to his family and friends. May he Rest in Peace."

The Killarney and District Motor Club are to launch an investigation into the incident, while Gardai are also investigating.
