One of the frontrunners in the race for the European Parliament says the election proves people want “stability and engagement with Europe.”
Fianna Fáil’s Billy Kelleher looks set to secure a second term in Brussels, with MEP Seán Kelly likely to be elected first.
The sorting of the Ireland South ballots is likely to continue until lunchtime with a first result expected this evening.
Speaking to RedFM news, Billy Kelleher says centrist politics works:
"It represents people who need support, need assistance, but also encourages enterprise and innovation and creativity. So it's a party that encompasses a broad spectrum. But at the same time, the public also looked at others and rejected them resoundingly, both in terms of the very populous anti-migrant groupings on the right. But equally, Sinn Fein, as well, in terms of their simplistic views to complex problems".
