Roy Kearney from Kearney’s Coaches says they are now spending an extra €350 per week on fuel for each of their 75 school buses.
The government cut the excise on fuel last week, however many in the haulage and transport industry say they are struggling to keep their vehicles on the road.
The Coach Tourism and Transport Council of Ireland is warning that 95% of school bus operators say it’s not viable for them to operate until June and say they need immediate government support.
Speaking to RedFM News, Roy Kearney of Kearney’s Coaches says urgent action is needed:
"There is a lot of us will have to pull services very soon if we can't get help, because it's unsustainable what we're running here at the moment. It could be a week, it might be two weeks. It all depends on what way fuel going. We're hoping to get help from the government and that we don't have to pull services but if we don't get help, we will definitely have to pull services. Nobody wants to leave children on the side of the road. We want to get them to school and we want to get them home from school. It would be an extra burden on parents as well."
