Cork Simon Community say they are regularly helping people living in private rented accommodation who are doing all they can to keep a roof over their heads but remain on the very edge of homelessness.

The charity says one third of people who use their Soup Run service live in private rented properties.

The service offers hot food, blankets and clothing to people who may be sleeping rough, who have just become homeless or who are at risk of losing their homes.

Last year the group served almost 11,500 hot meals in Cork.

Speaking to RedFM News, Paul Sheehan from Cork Simon says he expects the winter to be tough for many.

"It's not looking great at the moment, and there's huge pressure on households.

"Obviously, there were measures introduced in the budget to address that. It will probably give a little bit of comfort to people who are really on the very edge of homelessness.

"There are a lot of people for whom, for example, the tax credit on rental properties won't apply to them because they're already in receipt of HAP, and they're already not able to afford to keep the roof over their head.

"We're seeing about one in three people that are super and who are in private rented properties. They're putting all of their resources into keeping that roof over their head, and they really are at the very edge of homelessness."
