There were 17,055 vacant homes across the county according to Cork Simon’s latest report.

The charity which helps people out of homelessness is today focusing on fixing vacancy rates to improve the amount of housing.

553 people were accessing emergency accommodation at the end of July.

Speaking to RedFM News at Simon Week 2024, Architect Orla Hegarty says vacant properties across Cork need to be used:

"Some of the initiatives are aimed at property owners, because they're the ones that can instigate some action. Vacancy means housing that isn't occupied at the moment. And dereliction means housing that has fallen into misuse. And funding is available for both, local authorities now has a funding officer, so if somebody has a property and they're thinking of doing something, it's like a one stop shop now that will put them in touch with opportunities for funding."
