A Cork swimming club has launched a GoFundMe to help pay for the planning permission for the construction of an Olympic-sized pool which is sitting in a warehouse waiting to be assembled

Dolphin Swimming Club in Mayfield bought the pool, worth €1.1 million, after it was used in the Birmingham Commonwealth games two years ago.

It's hoped the six lane pool, earmarked for Glanmire, will pave the way for more Olympian hopefuls eager to emulate the success of medallists Daniel Wiffin and Mona McSharry

Speaking to RedFM News Chairman of Dolphin Swim Club Guiseppe Whelan says he has come up against a lot of barriers but is hopeful he will get the project over the line by taking it step by step:

"Lots of people told me we couldn't buy the pool, so we have bought the pool. The next problem I dealt with was, well, you don't have land. Well, thanks to Cork county council, they've given us a letter of intent for five acres of land in Cork. And then the next step then is planning. The planning process will cost about 100,000 euros to do that, so I'm taking a step by step."
