A Cork TD has called on the Minister for Education to offer Leaving Cert students a choice between written exams and calculated grades.
This was the option offered to students who completed their Senior Cycle in 2021.
Both Sinn Féin and Labour want students to be offered the choice of how they would like to be assessed.
The Labour Party has launched a petition calling on the Department of Education to offer the hybrid assessment model.
Cork South-Central, Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire told RedFM News that there is no reason a choice can't be offered:
"Leaving Cert. students are under huge pressure between the school closures last year, self-isolation for students and for staff, and all the stress and anxieties of the pandemic. It's proving really hard to cover the course. So what Sinn Féin believes is needed is a choice such as there was last year, a choice between accredited grades and written exams. And a lot of students will choose the written exams but student should have that choice. And I believe that that is a fair reflection of the year that these students have had. And I'm calling on the Minister for Education to provide that choice again this year. It is entirely justified. There is no reason that it cannot be done."
