A Cork TD says a ‘dangerous’ stretch of road in North Cork must be prioritised for upgrade works to avoid potentially losing funding of €1.5 million.
Seán Sherlock raised the long-running issue in the Dáil this week.
Hundreds of truck drivers staged a slow-drive protest on a section of the N73 close to Shanballymore yesterday.
Truckers say the section of the Mitchelstown to Mallow road close to Kildorrery is too narrow and have described it as an accident waiting to happen.
Speaking in the Dáil, Deputy Seán Sherlock outlined his fears for what will happen if the project does not go ahead immediately:
"If TII has allocated the €1.5 million for one stretch of the road, Cloher Cross to Canteen Cross, and €300,000 for Annakisha South, all we have to do is just press the green light for it to go to tender and to get the jobs done. And it's done then for a considerable period of time, except for the normal upkeep and maintenance. What I'm fearful of is that it will slip back down the agenda in terms of national prioritisation if there's any reprofiling of budgets."
