A Cork TD has expressed her concern over a planning application which has been lodged for 92 residential units on lands at Bessborough.
This is not the first time that planning has been submitted for development at Bessborough, last year two separate planning applications for developments at the site were refused permission.
The Cork Survivors and Supporters Alliance, which wants the burial site protected from development, says no development permission should be granted until the area marked on historic maps as a childrens’ burial ground is under public ownership and managed as a public cemetery.
Social Democrat TD Holly Cairns has been vocal on the matter in the past, and speaking to RedFM News she says her views remain unchanged and she believes the site should be protected:
"I think it's inevitable that we uncover the truth in relation to abuses in these institutions. The government has consistently tried to delay that and put it off for as long as possible. And everybody knows that it will be significantly harder if there's developments on these sites makes absolutely no sense to build on top of the potential childhood is engraved, with potentially hundreds of remains."
