A Cork TD is slamming the Government for failing to intervene over the Russian military exercises off the south west coast.

The Foreign Affairs Minister received confirmation over the weekend Russia is moving its drills outside of Ireland's Exclusive Economic Zone.

Fishermen's incomes are no longer under threat after they successfully negotiated with the Russian authorities.

Cork South West Deputy Michael Collins says the Government and Simon Coveney could have done more.

"The Government should have intervened, and meet with the Russian ambassadors on a one to one basis and do exactly what the fishing individuals had to do themselves.

"I'll be asking a lot of questions about this in the coming week as to why didn't our minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney, Minister for Agriculture Mr McConalogue and the Taoiseach intervene intervene personally and broker a deal that the fishermen had to go out and do themselves."
