"School secretaries not being paid for summer holidays is unacceptable."

That's according to a Cork TD who has called on the government to reach a fair settlement for school secretaries who are required to sign on unemployment benefits during the summer months.

The Irish School Secretaries are requesting to move to an external payroll and say they cannot keep waiting for the Department of Public Expenditure to do the right thing in terms of their pay.

Speaking to RedFM News, Cork TD Donnchadh O' Laoghaire said the government need to move on this:

"School Secretaries have been struggling with unequal pay and poor terms and conditions for a very long time. Negotiations have hit a standstill and what it is about ultimately, is the government taking position is that school secretaries, should have to sign on during the summer I don't think that that's acceptable. So I'm calling on the government, particularly, Minister for Public Expenditure, Michael McGrath and Minister for Education Norma Foley to move on to ensure that school secretaries and caretakers are paid during the summer and that they don't have to sign on."
