A Cork TD is claiming that there are 9,400 vacant homes across Cork City and County Councils.
Holly Cairns says that, despite this, only 200 properties have been repurposed by the local authorities in the last four years.
The number of homeless people in Ireland hit record figures at the end of August with over 10,800 people accessing emergency accommodation according to the Department of Housing.
Speaking to RedFM News, Deputy Holly Cairns says derelict houses should be brought back into use urgently:
"We're now at a stage where houses are being left rotting in a housing crisis to the actual extent that they're becoming a public health risk instead of a public good and we look at Cork as an example. "
