A Cork TD says there's significant pressure on nursing homes in Cork.
The ESRI reported yesterday that 60 nursing homes had closed throughout the country between 2018 and 2022 with 336 beds lost since the start of the pandemic.
There are warnings that more homes may close their doors this year if they don't receive investment and support from the Government.
Cork TD Donnchadh O'Laoghaire says opening up the Fair Deal Scheme, which helps families pay for care, may be a way of getting the beds we desperately need:
"The state directly needs to take a role and we need to above 600 additional publicly funded nursing home beds, and particularly focus in areas where there is significant pressure in my own area in Cork. There's significant pressure but a lot of other parts of the contrary, there's significant pressure as well."
