Traveller advocacy groups say support services - such as suicide support groups - need to be tailored for the needs of their community.

The comments by Cork Traveller Visibility Group come after it emerged that four people have died by suicide in the traveller community on the north side of the city since February.

Breda O' Donoghue from Cork TVG says traveller families are being ripped apart by suicide and she says the most worrying aspect is that the community is no longer shocked by suicide.

She believes that the erosion of traveller culture is one of the reasons behind the high number of fatalities in the community.

Speaking to RedFM News Breda O' Donoghue says there are some issues that only affect the traveller community:

"They're not traveller friendly in the sense that travellers have their own culture and identity, and the services that are there are designed for the settled community. They're not designed for the traveller community. The issues going on within the traveller community are different to the settled population, so the services are not designed to meet those needs. We do a lot of work with the services to try and get the services to be able to work culturally and appropriately with travellers, but we're dealing with services that are like a one size fits all and that's not working."
