Miriam Healy and Sylvia McHenry both had breast cancer and due to their amazing fundraising will now help others get diagnosed quicker.
A new machine, which helps detect an early diagnosis of cancer is now at Cork University Hospital, thanks to these Cork women.
The Ion Torrent Genexus sequencer cost €550,000 and can generate cancer profiles in just 24 hours – cutting patient waiting list times significantly.
The machine is the first of its kind in Ireland and the most expensive piece of equipment that CUH Charity have bought.
In 2019, Miriam and Sylvia launched ‘Cork Pink Week’ to raise vital funds for the new machine, holding a Business Breakfast and Pink Lunch at Collins Barracks.
Before the equipment was at CUH the cancer profiling was done in the United Kingdom, and due to this and the Covid-19 pandemic this would often result in significant waiting times.
