Some driving schools have increased their charge for lessons by up to €3 each to cover the rising cost of fuel.

It could cost learner drivers up to €60 more to complete their mandatory programme, with instructors dealing with increases to petrol and diesel.

Learner drivers must complete 12 lessons with a qualified instructor before they apply for a test.

Kevin Horgan, managing director of Ladybird Driving School, says they're trying to keep prices as low as possible, but fuel costs were getting two high:

"We tried to keep it as low as we possibly could so that each student had a chance to spread out their costs throughout training and college and fees and so on. So, we try to add a two or three euro surcharge on to each lesson which they're prepared to pay."
