A County Councillor says he is extremely concerned about the financial abuse of elderly people.
North Cork Councillor Frank Roche raised the issue at yesterday's Joint Policing Committee meeting where he claimed some elderly people are being 'cleaned out' by members of their own family.
Fraud and economic crime in Cork North and Cork West divisions is down by 21 per cent so far this year compared to last year.
People over the age of 60 represent almost a quarter of all fraud victims in the regions.
Speaking to RedFM News, Cllr Frank Roche says he knows of cases where elderly family members have been victims of financial abuse:
"You have elderly parents living with family, that have very valuable properties, and where you have particular members of the family coming in, putting pressure on them, knocking the family members that are actually caring for them and using force to hand over property and in some cases, something as little as their week's pension. It's frightening what's going on".
