A devoted married couple in their eighties who died in a multi vehicle crash on Tuesday in Ringaskiddy, will be laid to rest following a joint requiem mass in Carrigaline this weekend.
Pat and Berna Allen are survived by their six children, sixteen grandchildren and one great grandchild in addition to their siblings and extended family. They are also fondly remembered by a wide circle of friends.
The couple, who lived in Glenwood in Carrigaline, were making the short journey to a People's Park in Haulbowline in Cork Harbour for a walk when their car collided with a car transporter which then flipped on its side. A number of vehicles were caught up in the crash.
83 year old Pat Allen who was driving the car, was killed instantly at the scene of the crash on the N28 Cork Ringaskiddy Road between Shannon Park and Shanbally village at around 11am on Tuesday. His 82 year old wife Berna, who was a passenger in the vehicle, survived the collision but subsequently passed away at the crash site.
Postmortem examinations were completed on the couple at Cork University Hospital yesterday and an inquest into their deaths will take place in due course.
The couple will lie in repose at Forde's Funeral Home in Carrigaline tomorrow evening and their joint requiem mass will take place on Saturday at 11.30am in the Church of Our Lady and St. John in Carrigaline with burial afterwards to St Mary's Cemetery in the town
Meanwhile, investigations into the crash continue. A major emergency response operation was put in place when the accident occurred. The driver of the transporter was uninjured in the incident. The occupant of a third vehicle was hospitalised for non life threatening injuries.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to come forward and they're also appealing to road users who were travelling on the N28 in the Shannon Park area between 10:45 and 11am on Tuesday with camera footage to make it available to them.
