In response to the war in Ukraine locals in Glanmire established a small volunteer group - CRUTCHES4UKRAINE - to send a container load of crutches, walking frames and wheelchairs to eastern Poland from where they will be distributed to 5 hospitals within Ukraine.
The group have a collection point today and tomorrow at Supervalu Togher where people can drop off crutches, walking aids, wheelchairs or any mobility aids they are not using and the volunteers will ensure that they find a home in Ukraine.
Their goal is to collect 100 wheelchairs, 1000 pairs of crutches and 400 walking frames and they are half way there already Former Labour Councillor and Senator John Gilroy is spear-heading the project and will oversee the initiative from here to destination.
