Cork University Hospital has welcomed tens of thousands of honeybees to its campus as part of a very unique project.
CUH is the National Centre for the treatment of children who have experienced life-threatening allergic reactions to bee and wasp stings, and treats up to 20 patients with anaphylaxis every year.
Immunotherapy treatment using venom helps the immune system build up a tolerance to stings.
It's highly successful at reducing the risk of future reactions, but many sufferers remain fearful.
Patients will be able to watch the insects via cameras in the hives.
CUH hopes the project will lessen patient anxiety so they can enjoy life, while also benefitting from a reduced chance of a life-threatening event if stung.
The €15,000 project will also produce the hospital's own brand of 'CUHoney'.
