The low availability of homes to rent nationwide is unprecedented, according to Daft.ie.
Just 1,460 homes were listed to rent on the property website on November 1st - the lowest since records began in 2006.
Here in Cork rents in the county have recorded the largest rise after they jumped 14.6% on last years figures and now average €1211 while city rents have gone up by 6.9% with the average now standing at €1544.
The shortage of properties to rent in Cork has prompted Threshold to describe the latest report by Daft.ie as disheartening and frustrating.
The charity says rents have reached an unaffordable level for many prompted people to worry that they may become homeless
Author of the report Ronan Lyons says the availability of rentals is at an all time low.
"That figure of 600 properties usually available to rent in Connacht and Ulster, at the moment there's 150.
"That shows you how bad things are.
"No matter where you go around the country, these are numbers we haven't seen since we started compiling them in 2006.
"It's really unprecedented."
