Irish people have a moral obligation to live our lives differently, according to a Cork Green Party Councillor.
Dan Boyle was speaking following the release of a stark new UN climate change report which warns more extreme weather could be on the way unless carbon emissions are cut dramatically.
The report says global surface temperatures have also risen quicker over the past 50 years than at any time in last two millenia.
The UN Secretary General has described the report as a "code red" for the world.
Speaking to RedFM News, Cllr Dan Boyle outlines why Irish people need to pay particular attention.
"While they say Ireland will be least affected in change of weather patterns, we have seen in recent weeks that we're getting some warmer weather than we usually get.
"What we will get is heavier rainfall, what we will get is a lot more flooding, what we will get is greater degrees of coastal erosion.
"People say that we're a small country and what can we do about it. But we have to remember that the amount of carbon produced per person in Ireland is one of the highest in the world."
