The decommissioned naval flagship, the LÉ Eithne, could soon call Cork home.
The City Council has written to the Minister for Defence, asking that the LÉ Eithne be located in the city - for use as a maritime museum.
It wants to use the ship to showcase the Naval Service's history, and its role in Irish maritime and naval heritage.
In reply, Defence Minister Micheál Martin said the City Council should prepare a fully costed feasibility study as soon as possible - before a decision on the ship's future is made.
