The Department of Transport says it will engage with local authorities before any further reduction of speed limits.
L roads have been cut to 60 km/h down from 80 with further speed reductions on secondary roads expected this year.
Locals in West Cork say reductions on roads like the N71 in Bandon could cause huge travel disruption and want their voices heard before any futher changes to speed limits.
Speaking to RedFM News, Minister of State for Rural Transport, Jerry Buttimer says reducing speed limits is vital to reduce road fatalities:
"The action plan is under development, and there would be collaboration between key roads safety stakeholders and Minister O'Brien with the RSA, will endeavor to look at how we can ensure there is further consultation and engagement with local authorities, the introduction of safer default speed limits is a means of reducing fatality and accidents."
