A domestic violence support centre is working to develop services for gay and bisexual men who may be suffering abuse in their relationships.
OSS Cork and Cork’s Gay Project have launched an online survey as part of their “reach OUT” programme to coincide with Cork Pride.
The city-based OSS says they saw an increase in the number of people seeking their help after the pandemic, however they said gay men were noticeable by their almost total absence.
Speaking to RedFM News, Development Worker at OSS Cork Angela O’Connell says it prompted them to assess the need for services for the community:
"The issue of domestic violence is a very hidden one in any minority community, but in the LGBT community it's one of the less spoken about, less acknowledged problems that are experienced.
"But it is very real, and international figures would suggest that it's at least the same level as heterosexual relationships, if not more."
