A Douglas woman has been named the Irish Cancer Society's first ever Public & Patient Involvement Champion of the Year - in acknowledgment of her contribution to research projects - while herself being treated for cancer.

The charity said that Sonya Lynch has been an integral part of the 'Linking You to Support & Advice' study since its inception.

Sonya was first being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014.

The study is part of the Irish Cancer Society's Women's Health Initiative which is researching how women can be best supported to deal with difficult side effects that can arise from cancer treatment.

The annual Irish Cancer Society Research Awards also awarded Dr Laia Raigal with the Research Support Staff of the Year gong for her role in keeping the study going throughout the Covid period.
