A man who knocked down and killed a 51-year-old woman when he was three times over the legal limit for alcohol after he attended his father’s funeral has been jailed for 18 months.
Gobnait Twomey graduated from college three months before her death just weeks before Christmas in 2022.
42-year-old Michael Lucey of Derryvaleen, Ballingeary, Co Cork got behind the wheel of the car of a man who was with him, as he felt the man was too drunk to drive.
He drove the car down the main street in Ballingeary at 1:10am and struck a group of five pedestrians.
Defense Barrister Elizabeth O’Connell said Michael Lucey wanted to apologise for the tremendous harm he had caused the Twomey family.
Judge Colin Daly jailed him for three years and suspended the final 18 months of the sentence. He also disqualified him from driving for five years.
