Students at UCC are couch surfing and living in their cars as they cannot afford the rents being charged in Cork city.
That revelation comes as nearly €7,500 has been raised since last night for students struggling at the college after the Students Union set up a Go Fund Me Page.
The decision to set up the page came after the foodbank which opened last evening ran out of supplies within an hour of opening after 100 people turned up looking for assistance.
The food bank was opened after it was reported that students had been turning to Cork Penny Dinners for help in recent weeks.
High rents and the cost of higher level education are being blamed for the financial strain being placed on students.
Communications Officer with the Students Union Maeve Richardson told RedFM News that the stories told by students who came to the Food Bank last evening were heartbreaking.
